Call an emergency plumber when water is active
If a pipe has burst, a ceiling is leaking, a stopcock is stuck or water is near electrics, the immediate priority is isolation and safety. An emergency plumber can stop or reduce the damage before deeper investigation starts.
Leak detection is needed when the source is unclear
If there is damp but no visible pipe leak, or the same patch keeps returning, the job becomes tracing. Hidden leaks can come from central heating pipes, shower seals, wastes, mains pipework or shared building services.
Some jobs need both
A good emergency plumber should be able to make safe, ask the right questions and explain whether further leak detection or access is needed. That is especially useful in London flats, conversions and managed blocks.
Active water needs emergency plumbing. Unclear source needs leak detection. Many real jobs need both.
What to say on the phone
- Where the water is appearing.
- Whether it is active, dripping or only staining.
- Whether you can turn off the water.
- Whether a neighbour or flat below is affected.
- Whether boiler pressure is dropping.
For urgent or unclear leaks, start with leak detection and repair so the visit is focused on finding the source and fixing the plumbing fault.
